Kelly is mathematically rigorous but it requires precise edge estimates that most punters cannot produce reliably. The unit-sizing approach is a simpler framework that approximates Kelly without requiring exact probability estimates. The basic structure: define a unit as a fixed percentage of bankroll, typically 1 per cent, and size every bet as some multiple of units based on confidence in the edge.

A typical prop punter might use 0.5 units for marginal value bets, 1 unit for standard value bets, 2 units for high-confidence value bets, and 3 units only for the rare exceptional opportunity. The unit definition is fixed at 1 per cent of bankroll, so a £10,000 bankroll has £100 unit values and the maximum stake is £300 on the highest-confidence bets. The bankroll is reassessed periodically — quarterly is reasonable — and the unit value adjusts upward or downward based on results.

This approach has the advantage of forcing discipline through the unit definition. A punter cannot bet more than 3 per cent of bankroll on any single bet, regardless of how compelling the edge looks. The cap is the protection. The temptation to bet bigger on hot streaks or to chase losses with larger stakes runs into the unit cap, and the cap prevents the kind of bankroll destruction that comes from emotional escalation.

The drawdown reality every punter underestimates

Even with disciplined sizing, drawdowns are inevitable and they are larger than punters intuitively expect. A punter with a 53 per cent edge on 1.91 odds will experience drawdowns of 20 per cent of bankroll roughly once every 200 to 300 bets. The punters who understand this in advance ride out the drawdowns without changing their approach. The recovery temptation that destroys bankrolls

Losing streaks produce an emotional pull toward bigger stakes that nearly every prop punter feels at some point. The maths is brutal here. A punter down 20 per cent of bankroll who doubles his stake size to recover faster has not improved his chances of recovery; he has simply increased the variance of the outcome. The probability of getting back to even is unchanged by the stake size adjustment. The probability of going broke is materially higher.

The unit-sizing framework is most valuable during drawdowns because it constrains the punter’s ability to react reactively. The unit value falls automatically as bankroll falls, so smaller stakes apply during drawdowns even though the unit count per bet is unchanged. This is the right shape — bet less when the bankroll is smaller, bet more when it is larger — and the framework produces it without requiring conscious decisions during the emotional pressure of a losing streak.

The long view of staying in the game

The punters who are still betting NBA props five and ten years on are the ones who have built the discipline to stay solvent through inevitable drawdowns.
